Invasive: Photographic Works By Rachel Rushing
September 28-October 31

Opening, September 28th, 6:00-8:00 pm

Oil and Cotton is pleased to announce an exhibition of the recent work of Rachel Rushing. The opening reception will be hosted at Oil and Cotton on Saturday, September 28 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The event is free to the public, with food and beverages provided.

Invasive is a presentation of photographic prints, installations, and artist books that explore threats to local ecosystems in the form of excess waste and litter. Rachel Rushing has desired to find a meaningful connection to the natural world in the midst of the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolis and through her investigation has come into a greater understanding of her own ecological relationships. Rushing’s work brings awareness and thoughtful consideration to habits of consumption, waste, and apathy within the local biome.

OIL AND COTTON PROJECT ROOM AT THE DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART FROM JULY 19 – AUGUST

Oil and Cotton is pleased to announce the OIL AND COTTON PROJECT ROOM, an installation that features FREE workshops, events and activities, highlighting an exciting mix of education and art-making practices, in conjunction with the exhibition DallasSITES: Available Space at the Dallas Museum of Art.

Oil and Cotton is a creative commons for learning and sharing ideas. This exhibition is a mini-version of our Oak Cliff location, where we facilitate creative education and cultural exchange for all ages. The heart of our programming is at the intersection of academic art, the tradition of handcraft, and human ingenuity.

Join us for a series of workshops, events, and projects that explore process, material, and art making for all.

5-12am Friday, July 19: Opening Night
COLLECT & SORT: The public is invited to add to our collection of donated materials and bring in their old art and craft supplies to build out studio at the DMA. Help Oil and Cotton owners Kayli House Cusick and Shannon Driscoll collect, sort, and organize. Inventory will be available to museum visitors to use in make and take activities.

Architect Esther Walker will put finishing touches on her design of the Oil and Cotton Project Room in the Available Space exhibition at the DMA. Visitors will be invited to ask questions, view sketches, and learn about architectural processes. Drop-In, All Ages

1-4pm, Saturday, July 20

She will create a glossary of fiber art terms in a small English/Spanish vocabulary book. Drop-In, all ages.

11-3pm, Saturday, July 20
BULB BASKET WEAVING: Expert weaver Jan Schmidt will teach students an open weave pattern. The baskets will function as storage during our exhibition and may be taken home after the exhibition. INNATE: NEW WORKS FROM THE UNT FIBERS DEPARTMENT OPENING RECEPTION, SATURDAY, APRIL 13 6PM-8PM

INNATE: NEW WORKS BY MORGAN KUSTER, ANALISE MINJAREZ, BRITTANY HARRIS, & JULIE SHIPMAN APRIL 13th - MAY 3rd

OPENING RECEPTION, APRIL 13th, 6:00-8:00 pm

Oil and Cotton is pleased to announce the exhibition of the recent work of the University of North Texas Fibers Department. The opening reception will be hosted at Oil and Cotton on Saturday, April 13 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM. The event is free to the public, with food and beverages provided.

Innate features art work of four Fiber students from the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design. Through form and color, the work in this show draws inspiration from the artists’s connection to nature. Growing up in various natural environments, attraction to the fiber medium came as second nature. Living in an environment filled with the artificial, they aspire to return to a natural way of being through art making. These thoughts are expressed though processes including netting, weaving, watercolor, felt, and cellulose fabric.

LINEAR MOVEMENT - NEW WORKS BY LILLIAN PAIGE WALTON OPENING RECEPTION, SATURDAY, MARCH 23 6-8:00PM

LINEAR MOVEMENT: NEW WORKS BY LILLIAN PAIGE WALTON
OPENING RECEPTION, MARCH 23 6-8:00PM

Oil and Cotton is pleased to announce the exhibition of the recent work of Lillian Paige Walton. The opening reception will be hosted at Oil and Cotton on Saturday, March 23 from 6:008:00PM. The event is free to the public, with food and beverages provided.

The show’s title, Linear Movement, echoes the calligraphic, organic, and obsessive marks that characterize Lillian Paige Walton’s recent body of work. Linework serves as the foundation for the two and three dimensional works that Walton has been developing from a series of drawings
she created in mid 2012. Though she primarily employs painting and drawing mediums, Walton describes her current method of working most closely resembling collage technique. Walton takes disparate elements from a variety of sources (which Walton cites as ranging from Surrealist painting, household objects, to Devo album art ) and combines them with various methods of mark making. The resulting abstract compositions are reminiscent of aquatic landscapes, science fiction Bmovies, and bewitched breakfast foods...all of which, considering Walton’s diverse canon of influences, likely serve as inspiration.

Lillian Paige Walton received a BFA in Studio Art and a BA in Art History from the University of North Texas in 2012. She has participated in numerous group and juried exhibitions in the DFW metroplex. Her work was recently selected for the Rising Eyes of Texas 2013. She currently lives and works in Denton, Texas.

Take-Home Fun at Oil and Cotton

Today was a busy day at Oil and Cotton, with activities and workshops running from morning until evening. First, we joined Esther Kao for a leather workshop, taking home handmade key chains and wallets for our friends, family members, and key/wallet-deprived acquaintances.

Next, Lisa Huffaker stopped by to teach a paper snowflake making class. We used the snowflakes we made in Lisa's class to make everything from beautiful holiday cards to templates for elegant cake designs.

After stuffing our faces with a piece of our chocolate-filled collaboration (shown above), we joined Jessica Trevizo for a screen-printing demonstration.

In reward for participating in this test of upper-body strength (in which Sarah Westrup excelled and intern Paige Walton demonstrated need for improvement), we got to take home bags, tees and shirts featuring Jessica's original designs.

Mylan Nguyen at the Public Trust Gallery

If you missed the opening reception this weekend, be sure to visit the Public Trust Gallery to see Mylan Nguyen’s first solo show. Mylan is a talented young artist that teaches our popular DIY Silk Screen Printing and will be teaching our Installation Art Camp and Manga Art Camps this summer.
Les Grandes Personnes Ne Comprennent (The Big People Do Not Understand) invites visitors to revisit childhood forts and secret hideaways. The center of Mylan's site specific installation is a dreamy "playhouse" full of her sweet drawings that are sometimes tinged with a subtle dark humor. In addition to her drawings, she has included sculptures, ephemera and found objects such as an old record player and an early video game system. The exhibition pays homage to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s, Le Petit Prince and whimsically explores the themes of love, loneliness, friendship, and death.

Sharing Our Space With You...

Lately we have been fortunate to share our space with sweet families and friends. The lovely Joslyn Taylor hosted her daughter Audrey's Birthday Party here and added her golden touch to create a very special day. Friends celebrated with Audrey and made dream catchers dripping with with feathers, beads, and rainbows of color.
Our friend Mari Hidalgo threw a bridal shower for her close friend. Guests helped to create decorations for the wedding day. Shredded fabric was laced onto cord and made into a garland. Paper flowers were fashioned into festive decorations.
And last night Oil and Cotton was transformed into a Dance Hall for Jeff Whittington and Leila Grothe's double birthday blow-out.
This is a before picture, the during party shots were too full of mayhem and down and dirty dancing to share. To learn more about booking an event at Oil and Cotton please call or email. We look forward to sharing our space with you.

WIGWAM POP UP SHOP AND OIL AND COTTON ART SUPPLY SHOP

Oil and Cotton is excited to announce our recent expansion into the storefront adjoining our original brick and mortar. The addition means not only more room for classes and workshops and a larger retail art supply selection, but a space for a...n ever-rotating series of art and community happenings. We invite you to come by the shop to take part in learning and creative exchange.

To celebrate our expansion, we're thrilled to announce that the WIGWAM pop-up shop experiment is moving in throughout April to curate and transform the space into a unique shopping experience. WIGWAM was successfully established (as were we!) during the Better Block Projects in Oak Cliff and attracted a significant fan base. It was an adventurous collaboration between eight super-talented friends who, twice, re-vamped a rough, vacant space into a welcoming shop featuring a fun mix of art and craft, new and old, and surprising additions like farm fresh eggs and potted succulents.

You're invited to come christen Oil and Cotton's Art Supply Store expansion and join the kick-off party for WIGWAM'S one-month pop-up shop. Stop by Friday, April 1, from 6-10 p.m. for the grand opening. Guests are encouraged to shop, enjoy music, sips, and bites. There will be other surprises, in true WIGWAM fashion, a build-a-dream-catcher post as well a feather hair extension station.

For WIGWAM three, you can delight in much of what you came to appreciate previously including: offerings from a rich network of Texas artisans, handmade gardening tools, wood crafts, sculpture, vintage trinkets, mixed media art, jewelry, printed matter and much more. Everything will be affordable priced from $5 to $500. New items will we added weekly so stop by often.

Wigwam will be open Friday-Sunday, 12:00-6:00 p.m. throughout April.

Baby Showers, Birthdays and Graduations

We have been fortunate to share our space with lovely friends and families for celebrations and coming together. Stacy and Chris drove in from Austin and hosted a shower in anticipation of their new baby. Friends dangled a crystal and wedding rings above her belly to determine if it was a boy or GIRL!
Believe it or not, high school seniors are already throwing graduation parties. This group of lovely young ladies worked on a scrap book commemorating their shared history and friendship.
This birthday party included a sewing project. Children learned basic embroidery stitches in between cake and presents. Visit the Oil and Cotton website for more information about booking an event.
