Spring Break Camp : Cascarones!

Oil and Cotton spent Spring Break making beautiful natural dyed eggs with Natural Dye expert Sarah Westrup. Students learned about the Mexican American tradition of confetti filled cascarones. Empty egg shells were dipped in plant based dye solutions made from hibiscus flower, red cabbage, and red onion skins.
Students learned about value and color mixing with natural dyes in order to achieve our favorite colors. We then filled the eggs with confetti and draped them with tissue paper before the eggs were smashed in celebration for Easter. Visit our website to learn more about our upcoming Summer Art and Music Camps. We would love to share a day of fun, learning, and creativity with you!

Super Spring Break Camps!

Monday was our first day of this year's awesome line up of Spring Break Art Camps. We all had a great time learning how to make abstract color wheels and draw oil pastel cheetahs with instructors Miss Emily and Miss Jessica.  Students learned how to break down animal forms into simple shapes, color blending,  colors theory, and the power of imagination!
Miles made a printing plate with a scrap of corrugated cardboard from a discarded box and plants handpicked from our garden. Miss Emily taught the children about the many intricacies and variations of printmaking. Above we interpreted the chine colle process.
Luca created his very own ORB and painted a watercolor still life of stacked tree slices colored with a rainbow of chalk pastel. Our week long Operation Rainbow Brains summer camp will focus on COMMUNITY ART.
Check out our listings of our upcoming Summer Art and Music Camps. We would love to share a day of fun, learning and creativity with you!

Zine Camp: Matthew Cusick, Brandi Strickland, Mylan Nguyen, and Jessica Trevizo

This summer we were lucky to work with many special people during our ZINE CAMP collaboration with The Writer's Garret. Bringing our students together with working artists is important to our mission as a community art exchange. Making these interactions possible leads to long lasting connections and art making experiences that might not happen otherwise. And most importantly our kids LOVE working directly with artists, and that feeling is equally reciprocated by our artists!
Artist and Oil and Cotton family member, Matthew Cusick joined the camp to discuss his DEFACEMENT work, a series pages from old schoolbooks that are altered by sanding and scraping away everything except the page number, an illustration, and a few chosen words. Our zine makers used what they learned from Matt to create "erasure" poems with found text. Below is an example of Elijah's poem in his COLOR zine. A rainbow of colored tapes were used to create his "erasure" poem inspired by his love of art and John Lennon.
Collage artist and all around super lady Brandi Strickland sent a special delivery to Oil and Cotton from her home in Virginia. Zine campers opened a brown paper wrapped box to discover colorful pages from magazines, old book pages, exotic packaging labels, vintage stamps and more gleaned from Brandi's personal cache of collage papers. See Brandi's response to our thank you package here! Below are examples of collage made with Brandi's paper collection. Notice the difference between the original collage and the black and white photocopied zines.
Mylan Nguyen and Jessica Trevizo set up a silk screen studio in Oil and Cotton and taught students about the printmaking process. Students printed their book covers with original artwork created especially for the zine camp by Myaln and Jessica.

Thank you to the artists, students, and teachers that helped to make this the best summer camp ever!
Look for new zine camps this spring! Dates will be announced in November.

Electronic Fashion Camp at Oil and Cotton

Etiquette Creative and the Design Your World team are hosting our very first Electronic Fashion Camp! In this three day, hands-on camp, girls will learn about fashion, electronics and coding using the LilyPad Arduino. Registration is $95 per girl for the entire three day camp plus materials, payable online or by check. Any parent volunteers/chaperones that would like to stick around and help out may do so for $35 to cover the cost of food.

Katy Rose, age 4, got caught up in the whimsy of the world Mylan had created. Mylan, who regularly teaches adult screenprinting at Oil and Cotton, is really excited about working with young artists, who have a natural inclination to create space - forts, tents, imaginary worlds. She will guide students to work in drawing, painting, printing and sculpture mediums to create an installation of 835 W 7th. This camp is not to be missed if you are age 4-8, and the opening of the installation on Friday night if you are all other ages!

Mylan Nguyen at the Public Trust Gallery

If you missed the opening reception this weekend, be sure to visit the Public Trust Gallery to see Mylan Nguyen’s first solo show. Mylan is a talented young artist that teaches our popular DIY Silk Screen Printing and will be teaching our Installation Art Camp and Manga Art Camps this summer.
Les Grandes Personnes Ne Comprennent (The Big People Do Not Understand) invites visitors to revisit childhood forts and secret hideaways. The center of Mylan's site specific installation is a dreamy "playhouse" full of her sweet drawings that are sometimes tinged with a subtle dark humor. In addition to her drawings, she has included sculptures, ephemera and found objects such as an old record player and an early video game system. The exhibition pays homage to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s, Le Petit Prince and whimsically explores the themes of love, loneliness, friendship, and death.

Hula hoops were transformed into dream catchers. Students wrapped hoops with various papers and yarns. Knots were tied and webs were woven. After our afternoon break, we painted pine cones collected by friends and family. Feathers were attached to allow the good dreams to climb into our sleepy heads.
Kids enacting bad dreams warded off by their dream catchers...
