Spring Break Camp : Cascarones!

Oil and Cotton spent Spring Break making beautiful natural dyed eggs with Natural Dye expert Sarah Westrup. Students learned about the Mexican American tradition of confetti filled cascarones. Empty egg shells were dipped in plant based dye solutions made from hibiscus flower, red cabbage, and red onion skins.
Students learned about value and color mixing with natural dyes in order to achieve our favorite colors. We then filled the eggs with confetti and draped them with tissue paper before the eggs were smashed in celebration for Easter. Visit our website to learn more about our upcoming Summer Art and Music Camps. We would love to share a day of fun, learning, and creativity with you!

Electronic Fashion Camp at Oil and Cotton

Etiquette Creative and the Design Your World team are hosting our very first Electronic Fashion Camp! In this three day, hands-on camp, girls will learn about fashion, electronics and coding using the LilyPad Arduino. Girls will discover how microcontrollers work then create their own electronic fashion project using the LilyPad Arduino, a sewable microcontroller that bridges the traditional technology and arts divide.

The camp will be held August 1-3, 2012 at Oil & Cotton. We're looking for smart and courageous young girls, ages 12-14, to come experiment with female engineers, technologists, media experts and fashionistas to create one-of-a-kind LilyPad Arduino projects. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Registration is $95 per girl for the entire three day camp plus materials, payable online or by check. Any parent volunteers/chaperones that would like to stick around and help out may do so for $35 to cover the cost of food.

Register here.

Students drew with walnut ink, similar to the inks used during Leonardo da Vinci's lifetime and bound their finished sketches in leather notebooks.

Collage, Landscapes, and Economy...

This week our after school students were introduced to simplified landscapes by Georgia O'Keeffe. Students responded to Matt's artwork and created their own desert and seaside landscapes.
