Oil and Cotton is pleased to announce the exhibition of the recent work of the University of North Texas Fibers Department. The opening reception will be hosted at Oil and Cotton on Saturday, April 13 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM. The event is free to the public, with food and beverages provided.


Innate features art work of four Fiber students from the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design. Through form and color, the work in this show draws inspiration from the artists’s connection to nature. Growing up in various natural environments, attraction to the fiber medium came as second nature. Living in an environment filled with the artificial, they aspire to return to a natural way of being through art making. These thoughts are expressed though processes including netting, weaving, watercolor, felt, and cellulose fabric.

Spring Break Camp : Cascarones!

Oil and Cotton spent Spring Break making beautiful natural dyed eggs with Natural Dye expert Sarah Westrup. Students learned about the Mexican American tradition of confetti filled cascarones. Empty egg shells were dipped in plant based dye solutions made from hibiscus flower, red cabbage, and red onion skins.

Students learned about value and color mixing with natural dyes in order to achieve our favorite colors. We then filled the eggs with confetti and draped them with tissue paper before the eggs were smashed in celebration for Easter. Oil and Cotton is pleased to announce the exhibition of the recent work of Lillian Paige Walton. The opening reception will be hosted at Oil and Cotton on Saturday, March 23 from 6:00­8:00PM. The event is free to the public, with food and beverages provided.

The show’s title, Linear Movement, echoes the calligraphic, organic, and obsessive marks that characterize Lillian Paige Walton’s recent body of work. Linework serves as the foundation for the two and three­ dimensional works that Walton has been developing from a series of drawings
she created in mid 2012. Though she primarily employs painting and drawing mediums, Walton describes her current method of working most closely resembling collage technique. Walton takes disparate elements from a variety of sources (which Walton cites as ranging from Surrealist painting, household objects, to Devo album art ) and combines them with various methods of mark­ making. The resulting abstract compositions are reminiscent of aquatic landscapes, science fiction B­movies, and bewitched breakfast foods...all of which, considering Walton’s diverse canon of influences, likely serve as inspiration.

Lillian Paige Walton received a BFA in Studio Art and a BA in Art History from the University of North Texas in 2012. She has participated in numerous group and juried exhibitions in the DFW metroplex. Her work was recently selected for the Rising Eyes of Texas 2013. She currently lives and works in Denton, Texas.

Super Spring Break Camps!

Monday was our first day of this year's awesome line up of Spring Break Art Camps. We all had a great time learning how to make abstract color wheels and draw oil pastel cheetahs with instructors Miss Emily and Miss Jessica.  Students learned how to break down animal forms into simple shapes, color blending,  colors theory, and the power of imagination!

Miles made a printing plate with a scrap of corrugated cardboard from a discarded box and plants handpicked from our garden. Miss Emily taught the children about the many intricacies and variations of printmaking. Above we interpreted the chine colle process.

Luca created his very own ORB and painted a watercolor still life of stacked tree slices colored with a rainbow of chalk pastel. Our week long Operation Rainbow Brains summer camp will focus on COMMUNITY ART.

Natural Dyeing with Sarah Westurp

Last weekend, Oil and Cotton hosted an awesome class lead by instructor Sarah Westrup. Students spent a relaxing afternoon learning how to extract beautiful dye colors from natural materials such as black bean, black berries, hibiscus flowers, rosemary, red onion skins, turmeric, and avocado pits. Everybody took home a leather bound specimen booklet filled with luscious silk ribbon swatches and information on how to dye at home.  This class was sold out, but we have another workshop scheduled for April. Basket Brain

It was a busy weekend at Oil and Cotton, but we did have some time to slow down and weave amazing Algonquin Baskets with Jan Schmidt. If you missed out on this month's basket class, don't you worry. On March 16, Jan will be teaching a  Easter Basket Class here at Oil and Cotton.  You'll never want to use anything else to collect your pretty pastel Easter eggs and sweets.
