Spend your Weekend Painting in our Studio

Retro Portraiture with Anna Membrino
July 21-22
Saturday 10am-4pm & Sunday 1-4pm

Paint a series of portraits of your relatives based on old family photographs. The high contrast, low
resolution quality of photographs taken before the advent of high quality digital images lends itself to
creating paintings that are simplified and stylish. Students create several drawings and small paintings of their selected photographs. Working from these studies each student will then paint one large portrait of a cherished family member from a past era.

Each student will receive a kit which contains:
three 4"x6" canvas panels
two 8"x10" canvas panels
one large stretched canvas or cradled wood panel
a 6-color set of acrylic paints
basic brushes

Please bring a selection of at least six old photographs to the first class. Photographs from 1930’s, 40’s, or 50’s work very well for this project. However, any older family photographs can be used.
Anna Membrino recently graduated with her MFA in Painting from Southern Methodist University. She currently paints abstracted still lifes and lives in the Dallas area. Before beginning her current body of work Anna spent many years studying the family histories and untold stories that that were hidden in the hundreds of photographs taken by her grandparents throughout the 1930’s , 40’s, and 50’s.
