Parade of Puppets and Bridge-O-Rama

With the help of Oak Cliff artists (including Oil and Cotton's super intern, Jessica Sinks), organizations from across the region have crafted 10-foot-tall puppets in the likeness of 15 different individuals who during their lives had a significant impact on the history of West Dallas. The Parade of Puppets will take place this Saturday, March 3rd at 1pm starting at 400 Singleton Blvd. and parading east across the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge and back. This is a FREE event. Weaving Fibers and Glass Cutting this WEEKEND!

Spider Web Loom
Saturday, February 18, 11-2pm

People all over the earth make all the fabric they need on looms assembled from sticks which support a warp into which they weave local fibers and exotic threads into patterns of unlimited designs. Class participants will assemble a simple "spiderweb" loom made from fallen branches and weave a wall-hanging of rich design using yarn, threads, wool and fabric scraps of varied colors and patterns. The branches for the looms can be left in place to provide the means to hang the finished work on the wall.

Glass Cutting

“Regardless of whether you do mosaics, stained glass, leaded glass, fused glass, small-volume picture-framing or small glass jewelry, glass cutting skills are important. Come to Oil and Cotton for this two-hour class with Artist Larry Pile (AKA The Kessler Craftsman). Larry will bring plenty of oil-fed hand cutters, running pliers and grozers, some electric tools, straight edges and practice glass. The class will start with learning to cut and run straight lines, then move to curved lines in everything from simple clear glass to opaque art glass. Larry will also show you how to cut thin strips, circles, use a water-fed ring saw for intricate cuts. He’ll also show you how to smooth the edges of your cut glass using either a diamond grinder or a hand-held alundum stone. You’ll walk out of Oil & Cotton with a fabulous start in glass cutting. Students will put their new glass cutting skills to work and make a fused glass night light.

No prior experience required, ages 16 and up. All Materials included.

Oil and Cotton hosts the Amazing Hancock Brothers this Thursday

Oil and Cotton hosts the Amazing Hancock Brothers, Thursday Feb. 9th, 6:30-8:00pm for a print making showdown. The Hancock Brothers will demonstrate "low tech" printing techniques that blend silk screen printing, stamping, acrylic paint and more. Try your hand at printing and learn secrets of the Amazing Hancock Brothers. This a FREE EVENT! All are welcome.

Spring and Summer Internships at Oil and Cotton

Oil and Cotton is seeking interns for the spring and summer for 3 to 6 month terms. Interns work on all aspects of small privately owned community art center, including administration, assisting during children's art classes and adult workshops, special event coordination, public relations, social networking, and community outreach. Working directly with owners Kayli House Cusick and Shannon Driscoll, an internship at Oil and Cotton provides invaluable exposure to the art world, art education, and community activism for those pursuing a future in the creative arts.

Our internships are geared toward people seeking experience in art, art history, arts administration, art education, curatorial studies, graphic design, media studies, museum studies, or public relations, but we welcome applicants of all backgrounds.

Get into the art studio through songs, stories, and handwork. Parents stay and participate as kids learn how to handle materials, take care of art tools, create original works and get messy in our studio! Monday 10:30 or Friday 10:30

Weekly Art Class for Ages 4-6
Explore a variety of art-making materials and concepts, while learning about artists from history. This spring we will wrap up our study of process in modern art as we learn about VALUE and draw with "Action" Jackson Pollock, paint with Joan Mitchell, and create combines with Texan Robert Rauschenberg. Then we will Get Real!, learning about LINE with John Singer Sargent and SHAPE with Paul Cezanne.

Weekly Art Class for Ages 7-15

While developing their technical skills, students experience working in the styles of artists and art movements from ancient history to present day and keep a sketchbook for original ideas and observational drawings. This spring, we will begin with a review of the art elements as we paint original seascapes inspired by Courbet. We will get to know British artist David Hockney and how he uses the principles of design as we draw, paint, sculpt and collage. Then students will create a series of original sculptures to focus on balance. Monday 4:30, Tuesday 4:30 (age 7-9), 5:30, Wednesday 3:30, 4:30, 5:30 (age 10-15), Thursday 4:30, 5:30 (age 10-15) 

Weekly Art Class for High School Teens
High school students learn drawing skills, work on portfolios, and develop a personal series of artworks in different media. Volunteer exchange available. Wed 6:30-8pm

Summer Camps 2012 will be outstandingly unique. In addition to our Around the World with Art Camps for ages 4+, we are collaborating with area non-profits and neighborhood creatives to bring you camps for kids and teens in music, yoga, theater, installation art, fibers, and more!
